the german verdict

i am not a filmmaker, nor a film student or historian, not even a film critic, i just enjoy film

repeat that statement replacing the word film with music

that is the disclaimer

my opinion regarding the recently concluded 3rd german silent film fest, which they showed silent films from the early expressionist period of the 1920's is not authoritative not even persuasive, just my simple opinion....

i loved the first film, The Cabinet of Dr. Calighari, ts very tim burton-esque, or tim burton is very wiene-esque, whatever. it just the same, the crooked doors, the dark almost empty sets, the dark, yet vivid background. not to mention the plot, love the ending. very unique. i guess im biased sinced it the first film i saw, and also the first ever art film to be made, or so the german bald guy claimed. the music was okay, by SAGO, but sometimes the music overpowers the voice of the girl reading the script (whatever she's reading) and it gets too loud. i did not mention this until i heard the other.

i honestly did not like TABU, i got bored, and even with the music, although Bo Razon has got some really impressive credentials, but i was really not impressed with movie nor music.

The Golem on the other hand, being a folklore has a very preachy ending, but i really enjoyed the music of DRIP, the first time i heard music like that live, thank God, for Ayka, she was explaining to me, what break beats was or drum and bass or whatever, and only the Drip vocalist's voice of the four was heard, her voice reminded me of "five years" of sugar hiccups, but creepier, since it was coupled with an almost creepy story. The movie had some unintentionally funny scenes like the book that suppose to give life to the dead things was called or titled "the art of giving life to dead things" (prizes for being too literal?)

Asphalt, was a love story, he mets her, they fell in love, third party came, guy sacrificed, then the girl sacrificed, it was like an old star cinema production, but better because it was accompanied by Cythia alexander, though not impressed with her set, but still, she is Cynthia Alexander...

cant wait till next year's german film fest...
